Understanding The Perception Delta

Posted on Sep 2, 2025

The Candorly Feedback Assessment emphasizes the Perception Delta because it’s an effective tool for developing stronger leadership. This guide will explain Candorly’s Perception Delta and how to use it to unlock greater self-awareness. We’ll also describe how we score the Perception Delta ranges in Candorly reports.

Why is self-perception and self-awareness critical to professional growth and development?

1. Enhances Interpersonal Communication

Self-perception, how we see ourselves, directly influences how we interpret messages, respond to others, and manage emotions in conversation. Communication can break down when there’s a mismatch between how we believe we’re coming across and how others experience us. By exploring and adjusting these gaps, we can become clearer, more empathetic, and more effective communicators.

2. Builds Collegiality

Teams thrive when people understand how they’re perceived. A well-aligned self-perception builds trust, reduces miscommunication, and creates psychological safety. This strengthens collaboration and helps teams function more cohesively.

3. Boosts Leadership Effectiveness

Strong leadership is grounded in self-awareness. Leaders who understand how their communication, behavior, and decisions are perceived can adjust in real time to meet the needs of their team and organization. This reduces friction, builds trust, and creates clarity of direction. When leaders strive to minimize their perception delta, they model vulnerability, openness, and accountability, qualities that elevate team performance. Over time, this fosters a culture of continuous feedback and learning, directly impacting productivity, engagement, and innovation. This way, self-awareness isn’t just a soft skill, but a competitive advantage that contributes to stronger business outcomes.

What is Candorly’s Perception Delta?

The Candorly Perception Delta highlights the gap between how individuals see themselves and how others experience them. This difference reflects how much a person’s internal self-view diverges from external feedback. These gaps can signal potential blind spots or underrecognized strengths.

We calculate the Perception Delta by subtracting the average feedback score from a person’s self-rating. The result shows where their perception aligns with others and where it may not.

What is a small, moderate, and significant Perception Delta?

While the Perception Delta is insightful on its own, we add more context by grouping scores into three ranges: Small, Moderate, and Significant. These categories help feedback recipients understand how their gaps compare to broader patterns across our system.

Here’s how to interpret the Perception Delta score:

  • The Small Delta range is anchored at the 30th percentile, with a current value (2025) of ±0.21, reflecting strong alignment between self-perception and external feedback. Being at the 30th percentile means this score is smaller than 70% of all perception deltas in our system.
  • The Significant Delta range begins at the 80th percentile of all scores, representing the largest gaps. As of May 2025, this threshold is ±0.64.. This threshold sits in the top 20% of all perception deltas in our system, indicating some of the largest gaps we observe.

By grounding these ranges in real data, we help individuals interpret not just what their score is, but what it means in relation to others. See more in the table below:

CategoryPerception Delta Score RangeMagnitude-Based DescriptionDelta Icon
Small-0.21 to +0.21Aligned perceptions
Mid-range<-0.22 to -0.63 and >+0.22 to +0.63Moderate misalignment
Large≤ -0.64 or ≥ +0.64Significant misalignment

What does the Perception Delta direction tell us?

We also indicate the direction of the delta, whether someone underrated or overrated themselves compared to how others rated them. Both directions can signal misalignment, but each may require a different approach for reflection and growth.

  • Negative delta: self-rating is higher than peer feedback → possible blind spot
  • Positive delta: peer feedback is higher than self-rating → possible undervaluing

Final thought

We hope Candorly’s Perception Delta helps feedback recipients develop a clearer self-perception, enabling them to communicate more effectively, foster stronger collaboration, and lead with greater impact, delivering real value to their teams and the business.
